Megan Smolenyak and Ann Turner have given genealogists a good tool for those new to DNA. The explain how the Y chromosome (yDNA), passed on by fathers, and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), passed on by mothers, can tell you if you’re related to someone with the same surname, pinpoint a certain ancestor and verify your other research. They also discuss the benefits and drawbacks of DNA testing.
